A massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country on a Monday, unleashing the most powerful seismic jolt this century. Now, days later, the brutal reality of disaster response has set in. The window to pull people alive from the wreckage is slamming shut.
The Grim Math of the Golden 72 Hours
Ask any disaster recovery expert about survival odds, and they will point straight to the golden window. The first 48 to 72 hours offer the highest statistical chance of finding trapped people alive. After that threshold passes, dehydration, internal injuries, and secondary collapses decimate survival rates.
Yet, this timeline isn't an absolute law of nature. Volunteers and emergency teams working in heavily affected cities like Cali, Pereira, Manizales, and Quibdó know that pockets of air and access to trapped moisture can stretch those precious hours.
Volunteer rescue worker Daiana Rojas spent hours holding onto that exact hope. Hearing faint sounds coming from deep inside a collapsed structure kept her team going long past exhaustion.
"We have been hearing sounds since 2:30 a.m., so our hope remains," Rojas shared with reporters.
The Scale of the Devastation
The human cost continues to climb. At least 265 people have lost their lives, and hundreds more remain unaccounted for. Official government figures from President Abelardo de la Espriella's administration point to nearly 500 missing individuals, while independent, civilian-run databases track over 4,200 missing people. More than 25,800 families face total displacement and destruction.
Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder warned that time was running out rapidly during the middle of the week. He noted that rescue squads had mere hours left to make a difference before operations shifted entirely from rescue to recovery.
