Iain McTavish, a 46-year-old cyclist and philosopher by background, lost his life when a car struck him and two of his clubmates during a routine evening training ride. The crash occurred around 7:10 pm on a Tuesday, transforming what should have been a standard group outing into a profound local tragedy.

He was a dedicated member of the Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club, a familiar face at the Renfrew bunch rides, and a constant presence at Georgetown Time Trials. His commitment to the sport went beyond personal fitness. Last year, he achieved a rare distinction by attending every single round of the Track League, even stepping up to serve as a rider representative on the committee.
When a rider is that dependable, their absence cuts deep. Johnstone Wheelers released a statement calling him "one of cycling's good guys," noting that his death would take a long time to process. Scottish Cycling echoed those sentiments, describing him as a vital, friendly anchor who would always turn up at the meet point even if nobody else showed up.

The Investigation Underway
Police Scotland confirmed that the collision on the westbound carriageway between the Langbank and Woodhead roundabouts involved a blue Ford C-Max Zetec and three cyclists. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Iain was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Two other cyclists, aged 37 and 27, were transported to the hospital with injuries. The 33-year-old driver of the Ford was also taken to the hospital and subsequently released.
Sergeant Jack Swindells of Police Scotland urged anyone who was driving through the Port Glasgow area at the time to check their dashcam footage. Officers are piecing together the exact timeline and circumstances of the crash to provide answers to a grieving family and community.
