Prison cells are volatile places, but managing high-profile, high-risk offenders stretches correctional security to its absolute breaking point.
Axel Rudakubana, now 20, is currently serving a life sentence for the horrific murders of three young girls—Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe—at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport. But fresh details from a recent court appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court expose a troubling pattern of violence behind bars at HMP Belmarsh before his subsequent transfer to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.
Prosecutor Catherine Pattison laid out a series of alarming charges that paint a picture of ongoing volatility inside maximum security.
The Boiling Water and Sugar Incident
The core accusation involves an attack that took place on May 8, 2025. Rudakubana allegedly hurled boiling water mixed with sugar through the service hatch of his cell door at an officer.
Sugar is often added to boiling water in prison assaults because it thickens the liquid, making it stick longer to the skin and causing significantly worse burns. Fortunately, prompt medical attention prevented lasting injury, but the danger to staff remains stark.
Following this attack, Rudakubana reportedly claimed that prison officers were poisoning his food.
A Pattern of Disruptive Behaviour Behind Bars
The boiling water incident wasn't an isolated event. Court disclosures revealed multiple other charges stemming from his time in custody:
- May 6, 2025: Two days before the water attack, he allegedly threatened to soak a female officer with an unknown liquid if she didn't hand him a newspaper, subsequently throwing liquid at her.
- June 2025: Officers discovered sharpened stone shards—prized from the floor of his cell—stuck to the underside of a shelving unit. When questioned, he claimed he kept them for self-defence.
- October 28, 2025: He allegedly punched a male officer who challenged him when he tried to bypass staff checking medication compliance.
These allegations resulted in four specific charges: attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, and possessing an offensive weapon in prison.
Moving From Prison to Broadmoor
Rudakubana appeared via video link from Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, resting his head on his hand. He wasn't asked to enter any pleas and was remanded in custody ahead of an Old Bailey appearance on October 19.
Back in July, the Ministry of Justice confirmed his transfer to the high-security Berkshire psychiatric facility. When prisoners present severe mental health disorders that make safe management impossible within standard correctional facilities, clinical teams can authorize a move under the Mental Health Act.
Broadmoor houses some of the UK's most infamous individuals. Patients there undergo mandatory clinical treatments and structured therapies rather than standard penal management.
If clinical assessments eventually show no further need for hospital-level psychiatric care, the legal framework allows for a swift return to regular custody. Until then, the focus remains on containment, security, and court proceedings for the mounting prison charges.
