A quiet Friday morning in rural northern Michigan shattered when a multi-scene shooting left five victims and the suspected gunman dead.
Michigan State Police rushed to a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township just before noon following emergency calls reporting gunfire. Troopers walked into a horrific scene. Three people were already dead inside the residence, and a fourth person clung to life with critical wounds. Medics rushed the survivor to a hospital, while officers scrambled to identify who pulled the trigger.
The suspect had already vanished.
The Manhunt and Grisly Discoveries
Police identified the fleeing suspect as 39-year-old Chad Hickman. What followed was an intensive, multi-agency manhunt across Missaukee County, located roughly 170 miles northwest of Detroit. Aviation units, canine teams, and local troopers flooded the region, warning residents via social media that an armed and dangerous killer was loose.
During the active search, law enforcement uncovered another grim milestone. A fourth victim was found dead at a separate residential location within the county.
The dragnet closed in when deputies spotted Hickman's abandoned vehicle near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township. Troopers searched the dense timberland and located Hickman's body alongside a fifth victim. In total, six lives were lost, including the perpetrator.
